We discussed "the Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell today....
Monday, 10/20 - Shiptrap Island brochures are due - be creative and use the story... manipulate it to suit your needs.
consider:
What makes man different from animals?
consider:
foreshadowing: when an author plans clues about what will happen in the story later to help build suspense.
suspense: the quality that makes readers eager to know what happens next
How does Connell build suspense throughout the short story? give specific details... comment on this post...

I think that Rainsford changed at the end of the story because he realized that when your running from death and or running for your life you then know how it feels. Like Rainsford said he didn't care that the animals they were hunting didn't feel anything not fear or pain or even death. He realized that what happened to him at the end of the story he realized that he knows how the animals feel when he shots them. I think this was a better way to end this story then when we read the lady and the tiger. The only question i have was why was this man killing hunters for no reason and why he was having fun doing it. Also why did the genral let Rainsford live when he had the chance to kill him why didn't he why was this a game to him killing hunters for no reason.
Overall I though the story was interesting. The way the author wrote the story was especially interesting to me. Connell sets everything up, then slowly works his way to executing it. Suspense is at every corner. He keeps the reader on the tip of their toes always wondering if Rainsford will live or die.
In the beginning of the story rainsford is portrayed as this hunter with absolutely no pity for the animals he kills. He is cold hearted when it comes to hunting. Throughout the story Rainsford learns how the hunted feels when he himself becomes the hunted. I think Rainsford comes to a revelation. I doubt hill ever hunt again.
the was story indeed different, and interesting. Rainsford does change from the beginning to the end. In the beginning he has no mercy for those who are being preyed on because in his eyes, they're nothing important about them. But the roles switch on Shiptrap Island, and he learns the hardships of being hunted instead of his usual role as the hunter. He understands now those who are being preyed have fear; fear of pain and death and it does bring a huge impact on them.
i agree with melissa; i think its going to take a while for Rainsford to get back into the hunting game. He's going to need time to get himself together or probably quit doing it for good.

I thought in the beginning the story was all nice and simple and didn't have a problem yet and then right away I read that the general is hunting humans. At first I was like Wow! and then I got upset and then shocked that the author Connell would make such an intriguing storyline, but it was such a good thing to do, because it was somewhat of a trick to make you read more, and I did.
The suspense isn't scary like that in a mystery story, but the kind of suspense that anyone can like and be able to build upon it. For one thing I don't like mysteries but this story was different because the suspense led you on in the way that made you contemplate and think more, rather than getting scared(like I do in mysteries). Throughout the whole story I never forgot what happened in the recent pages, and when it came to the hunt, reading what happened each day was so crazy but so fun to read. The words really flowed, and I actually visualized the words being shown.
The foreshadowing was the title of the island because people eventually got trapped there and couldn't escape until they hunted with the general. In the end Rainsford only changed in the sense that he felt what the animals he hunts feel. He finally got hunted and was left traumatized because he didn't know if was going to die or not, and he realized that that was how the animals felt.He told the general that he is a hunter and not a murderer. I think all the things that happened to him with the general was a lesson to him, and he learned that hunting isn't all its cracked up to be.
This was a really interesting story. I liked it because you never really knew which way it was going. Like in the begging you thing is happening and then the story does a whole 180 was rainsford falls the boat. Then towards the middle in began to think that this man was eating the people he was huting; i mean isnt that the ideal reason for huntting...food? I still wonder what exactly he does what thoes people and whats the thrill of killing of them? Then in the end you have no idea whats going to happen to rainsford and then he ends up in the generals bedroom. The end was a bit confusing to me though becuase the author never wrote out that he killed the general and i didnt read into it so much that i coule figure that out and when i did it came to as a shock. I think that the main character rainsford really did change as a person throughout this story and i feel that he looks at life a lot differently now.
i think it was good that he stalls to give the answer but it makes the reader want to continue reading until they find out if Rainsford dies or not. I think he compares himself to the animals because of their feelings of pain and when they die.
i think rainsford changed about the way he thinks about killing animals. he when though a hard time running for 3 days feeling like the pray of the predator. he thinks twice about what he does now at the end of the story he realized that he knows how the animals feel when he shots them.the genral let Rainsford live when he had the chance to kill him why would he do that if he could of ended the game beacuse he the one that good hit even harder at the end
This story was rather fascinating because it show how a man can really be and how a man can really think of an animal. I don’t think that there is much that makes a man different from an animal only that were probably more dominant because of our ability to think. I strongly believe that the author did a really good job in foreshadowing and building suspense because in the beginning, we have this man who thinks that animals have no feelings and don’t know what going on in there surrounding, to a man that had to run for his life in the end. I think the author did a good job with suspense because it kept me wonder whether he was going to be the hunted or the hunter. I think that even though this was a pretty long short story it was a good story to work on because it had examples of these components like foreshadowing and suspense for me to learn from and to try to incorporate that in to my writing. I think Reinsford changed in numerous ways, but one that he changed the most was how he opened his eyes to see that animal are no different from human when it comes down to emotions.

rainsford changed at the end of the story becouse he went through alot in the past three days. i think that when rainsford returns he will never forget what happened to him.i think this experience will cuase him not to hunt again becouse now he sees how it feels to be hunted and he finally sees how the animal feels
i believe the story was awsome and i couldn't' put it down cause i just wanted to continuo reading, at first i thought it was kinda weird to hunt your species, but i kept on reading i notice how ins-tensed it was to be hunt by your own kind. in the beginning Rainsford didn't care on how the huntee's felt about being hunted , but as i read i notice when he was put inside the shoes of the huntee's he thought of life between the hunter's and huntee's change his life around. he thinking change completely to know that his own lv of hunting is hunter his own hunter, plus he was in an island that he has no experience in it's jungle compared to hunter who lived there. i know his mind if thinking change after all 3 nights and dout he'll hunt again, see the life elearn experience.

I think Rainsford changed at the end of the story. He was running from death and found out how it feels to be on the other side.It was definitley a better ending then the lady or the tiger because I think readers want to know what happens at the end of a story not guess what happened. I agree with Melissa and Livianette that it will take Rainsford a while to get back into hunting because now he knows how it feels. From this experience who knows he might not even get back into hunting.
I think that at the end of the story Rainsford opion changes. Because in the begining he doesnt care about how the other side feels. He likes to hunt in his spear time, but when the table turn and he is the hunted. His way of thinking changes after he has won the "game". he is now a nice person.
I think that Rainsford changed at the end of the story because he realized running from a hunter isnt much fun. Now he sees how the animals felt when they were being hunted by him. I think he realized that he will never hunt an animal again because now he knows how it feels to be the prey.

I say that the author did a good job in foreshadowing and building suspense in the beginning. That is because in the beginning we have this man who thinks that animals have no feelings and don’t know what going on in there surrounding, to a man that had to run for his life in the end.
i think this story was really good and i liked because you kind of didnt know what was going to happen next until you kept on reading and i like those kind of stories. i think rainsford changed alot from the beginning of the story when he didnt care how the animals felt about being hunted until the end when he knew what it felt like to be on the other end of the gun. he learned throughout the story and i dont think he will be hunting again
I really liked this story. Rainsford changed by learning a lesson because in the beginning he was the hunter with no pity for animals at all ; in the middle he was the huntess being hunted, and in the end he finally knew what it felt like to be hunted.
